Dayton Takes Care of Business at CharlotteFlyers shoot 50 percent in beating 49ers
Chris Johnson led Dayton in scoring with 14 points and Luke Fabrizius knocked down four three pointers off the bench to spark the Flyers' 69-51 win at Charlotte, their largest conference road victory since beating George Washington 89-53 on February 21, 2002. Dayton (18-9, 6-6) made 24 of their 48 field goal attempts on the night and managed to outscore the 49ers 16-14 in points off turnovers despite turning the ball over 21 times to Charlotte's 15. Jamar Briscoe led three Charlotte (10-15, 2-9) players in double figures with 14 points. Charlotte's issues came on the offensive end, where they made just 35.4% of their shots while assists on just four of their seventeen field goals. Brian Gregory's team also out-rebounded Charlotte 37-23 on a night that saw the Flyers' depth wear down the 49ers, as their reserves scored 30 points on the night to Charlotte's six. Briscoe gave Charlotte their first and only lead of the game 29 seconds into the contest, knocking down a three to provide the first points of the game. Dayton would respond by scoring the next seven points with a Chris Johnson three sandwiched in between a Josh Benson basket and a pair of Chris Wright free throws. Briscoe would score Charlotte's first eight points of the game, knocking down a pair of three-pointers. But the Flyers had balance, with Fabrizius knocking down two shots from beyond the arc with the second giving Dayton a 13-8 lead with 14:02 left in the half.
That shot would touch off a 13-5 run for the Flyers, who pushed their lead out to 10 on a Josh Parker three to make the score 23-13. Things would only get worse for Charlotte after close to within five at 23-18 with 7:28 remaining in the half. The Chris Braswell layup that did the honors turned out to be Charlotte's final points for nearly five minutes as Dayton went on an 11-2 run to take a 34-22 lead into the locker room. Fabrizius' third three of the half closed the scoring, capping a half in which Dayton's reserves outscored Charlotte's bench 16-2. Before two minutes elapsed in the second half Dayton would extend their lead to 18 points on a Johnson three pointer. But the 49ers were able to answer with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes, closing to within 10 (38-28) on a Javarris Barnett three with 15:25 left in the game. That would be as close as Charlotte would get the rest of the game, with Dayton leading by as many as 20 points with a Ralph Hill dunk with 25 seconds remaining capping the scoring. Dayton begins a three-game home stand on Saturday as they host Duquesne, and Charlotte next visits Saint Louis on Saturday night.
