St. Bonaventure Upsets DuquesneDukes suffer first conference loss
Ron Everhart's Duquesne Dukes were one of the hottest teams in college basketball, having won 11 straight games with the majority of those triumphs lacking suspense. The suspense issue was of no concern at St. Bonaventure on Saturday night, but unfortunately for the Dukes they were on the wrong end of the outcome. Michael Davenport't three-pointer with 1.6 seconds remaining gave the Bonnies (12-10, 4-5) a 64-62 victory, handing Duquesne (16-6, 8-1) their first conference loss. Davenport led three Bonnies in double figures with 16 points (Andrew Nicholson and Matthew Wright scored 15 apiece), helping Mark Schmidt's team escape despite turning the ball over 18 times. "We had to defend them and we did that," said Schmidt. "They shot 35% (35.8), 26% (26.9) from three and we out-rebound them. I tell the players all the time that 'your hard work is going to pay off', and that's a prime example of putting in time and having it come to that." B.J. Monteiro led Duquesne with 17 points while Damian Saunders (16 and 14 rebounds) and Bill Clark (15 and seven rebounds) also reached double figures. But freshman guard T.J. McConnell struggled, shooting 2-for-10 from the field and scoring seven points while turning the ball over three times to go with three assists. St. Bonaventure got off to a good start, leading 22-14 at the under-12 media timeout thanks to a Matthew Wright three-pointer. That would be as large as their lead would get, but the Bonnies were able to keep Duquesne at a safe distance until a Monteiro layup in the final seconds of the half cut the lead to four at 36-32.
The Bonnies would increase their lead to three before Duquesne scored four straight to regain the lead, with the final two points coming on a Monteiro layup with 11 seconds to go. That set up the final sequence, with Conger executing a dribble handoff to the southpaw who knocked down the game-winner. St. Bonaventure is off until next Saturday, when they host La Salle, while Duquesne won't play again until the showdown with Xavier next Sunday.
