Duquesne Ends Three-Game Skid

Dukes capitalize on mistakes of generous Bonnies

A Sean Johnson three-pointer with under a minute remaining made all the difference for Duquesne, who snapped a three-game losing streak with a 70-64 win over St. Bonaventure at the Palumbo Center. Johnson and B.J. Monteiro scored 19 points apiece to lead the Dukes (18-10, 10-5) while freshman T.J. McConnell was all over the stat sheet. McConnell finished with 12 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and five steals, allowing Duquesne to move one step closer to a first round bye in the conference tournament. Andrew Nicholson and Ogo Adegboye scored 12 points apiece to lead the Bonnies (15-13, 7-8), who lost for the third time in the last four games.

A Demitrius Conger three just over a minute into the game gave the Bonnies the first points of the game but the Dukes would respond with six unanswered to grab control. In total it would be an 11-1 run for Duquesne, but St. Bonaventure would claw back to tie things up at 11 with a 7-0 run of their own. Duquesne regained the lead on a Monteiro layup at the 12:29 mark only to have the Bonnies answer with a pair of Adegboye free throws. Matthew Wright's three less than a minute later gave St. Bonaventure their final lead of the game at 16-15, but the visitors remained in the contest throughout. A Bill Clark layup gave Duquesne an 18-16 lead with 10:04 left in the first half, and later in the stanza seven points from Johnson pushed the Dukes' lead out to six following the under-4 media timeout. A Monteiro three with 1:20 left in the half pushed the lead out to seven, and Duquesne would lead 37-31 at the intermission.

Duquesne would push their lead out to as many as nine by the first media timeout and it would stay in that general vicinity until the 14-minute mark. St. Bonaventure scored five straight points to cut the margin to four at 48-44 with 13:05 remaining, but the Dukes answered with a Damian Saunders dunk thirty seconds later. A Michael Davenport layup with 7:52 remaining cut the margin to just three points, put the Bonnies squandered opportunities to get even closer with turnovers on consecutive possessions. The Dukes extended their lead out to seven before the Bonnies made a final push, closing to within one on an Andrew Nicholson free throw with 1:24 to go. But after a 30-second timeout called by head coach Ron Everhart, Johnson provided the dagger. A McConnell layup with 22 seconds left put the game out of reach for St. Bonaventure, who watched Johnson make two more free throws with six seconds remaining to provide the final score.

Duquesne takes on Richmond at the Robins Center in the regular season finale for both while St. Bonaventure hosts Rhode Island.
