Colonials End Losing Streak Taylor, Smith lead way past Saint Louis
Thanks to solid performances from Tony Taylor and Dwayne Smith, Karl Hobbs' George Washington Colonials ended their four-game losing streak with a 52-46 win over Saint Louis at the Smith Center. Taylor led the way with 19 points and three assists while Smith added a double-double to the tune of 13 points and 13 rebounds. Saint Louis (7-13, 2-5), who is now winless in four trips to Foggy Bottom, was led in scoring by Kyle Cassity and Mike McCall (10 points apiece). George Washington had dropped three Atlantic 10 games in addition to a home loss to Harvard, making Saturday's result a welcome verdict. "Well, these fans were dying for a win," remarked Coach Hobbs after the game. "It wasn't the most important win, but the effort was impressive. The student stuck by us, and now we have to keep it going with a couple of games on the road, and keep our focus." After a back and forth start to the game SLU gained a decent cushion thanks to George Washington turnovers. Three points from Brian Conklin started a 10-2 Billiken run to push the score out to 17-8 with 10:06 remaining, but that edge didn't last too long. Less than three minutes later the Colonials drew back to within one point, forcing a Saint Louis timeout at the 7:45 mark with the score being 19-18 SLU. A Cassity layup out of the timeout would push the lead back out to three, and four more points made the score 25-18 with 5:03 to go. GW would then score seven of the next eleven points, going into the half down 29-29. Saint Louis scored 13 points off of turnovers in the half, a major reason why the Billikens enjoyed their edge.
"We missed shots, we got wide open looks only to have them go out of bounds," said Saint Louis head coach Rick Majerus. "We had 12 turnovers against a veteran team against their pressures....We are what we are. We're a young team that has a tough time scoring." Next up for the Colonials is a trip to Pittsburgh on Wednesday night where they'll face first-place Duquesne. Saint Louis next takes on Massachusetts at home the same night.
