Colonials Win Road Finale

Taylor's big night sparks win at URI

Karl Hobbs' George Washington Colonials had little use for the Senior Night festivities at the Ryan Center, and they showed as much beating Rhode Island 66-55. Tony Taylor scored a game-high 23 points while also racking up five assists to lead the Colonials (16-13, 9-6), who pulled into a tie with the Rams for fifth place in the Atlantic 10 with one game remaining for both. Jamal Wilson (13 points, 11 rebounds) and Delroy James (12 points, 11 rebounds) both posted double-doubles to lead Rhode Island (18-11, 9-6), who lost their third home conference game this season. URI did themselves in with a staggering 19 turnovers and a cold night from beyond the arc, making just three of fifteen from deep. George Washington was even worse from deep (1-for-13) but they took care of the basketball (10 turnovers) and got to the foul line to make up for their poor shooting.

After a Taylor basket kicked off the scoring at the 18:21 mark the Rams took the lead on a Ben Eaves three pointer 21 second later, and URI would not trail again for more than 11 minutes. But GW would go on an 8-0 run, taking a 22-19 lead on an Aaron Ware basket with 5:38 left in the half. James answered with a bucket of his own to cut the lead to one but six points from Taylor and David Pellom over the next three minutes push the Colonials' lead out to seven. URI went on a 6-0 run late in the first half to pull to within one before a pair of Bryan Bynes free throws made the margin 32-29 going into the break. George Washington got the majority of their work done in the paint, scoring 20 of their 32 points inside.

That would continue in the second half as a Dwayne Smith dunk less than a minute into the half set the tone. URI pulled to within five on three separate occasions early in the half but their poor shooting made it tough to push any closer. A Pellom dunk sparked an 8-2 run for George Washington, extending their lead out to 48-37. Rhode Island pulled to within three on a pair of Wilson free throws with 5:35 remaining but that would be as close as they'd get, with four straight points from Taylor pushing the lead back out to seven. Six free throws over  a 38-second stretch late in the game from Bynes pushed the lead out to 15 at 66-51, providing the Colonials with more than enough of a cushion to close things out.

George Washington hosts Dayton in their season finale on Saturday, and Rhode Island visits St. Bonaventure.
