Rhode Island Leaves No Doubt

Rhody wins battle of the Rams in emphatic fashion

In the history of the building now known as the Izod Center there have been many forgettable moments for the home team, and Saturday it was Fordham's turn as they played their final game of the season at the cavernous arena. Delroy James scored a game-high 29 points to go along with eight rebounds and every Rhode Island (18-10, 9-5) player who saw time scored as Jim Baron's team whipped Fordham 90-58. As a result URI remains in the conversation for fourth place in the Atlantic 10, which comes with the reward of a first round bye in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament. There are no such worries for Fordham (6-20, 0-14), whose loss combined with Saint Joseph's win over St. Bonaventure guaranteed another season without a conference tournament appearance. Brenton Butler led four Fordham players in double figures with 12 points.

Fordham never led and truth be told never had a chance as URI scored the game's first 10 points by the 16:19 mark. James scored six of those points with eight coming from the Rhode Island frontcourt (Will Martell scored two) before a Branden Frazier jumper temporarily stopped the bleeding with 15:47 remaining. Five straight points from Butler foliowing a Nikola Malesevic layup cut the URI lead to 12-7 but all that seemed to do was get the Ocean State Rams upset. Rhode Island answered with a 13-0 run aided by two turnovers and four missed shots including a Kervin Bristol missed dunk. Chris Gaston's layup with 10:55 left in the half made the score 25-9, and his next hoop less than two minutes later made the score 30-11. URI would go into the locker room leading 46-19 as they shot 57.1% from the field and whipped Fordham 25-13 on the glass.

Things would only get worse for Fordham in the second half as they'd trail by no fewer than 27 at any juncture. Gaston's turnover 24 seconds into the half resulted in a pair of James free throws to push the lead out to 29, and a Malesevic three after another Gaston turnover made the score 51-19 at the 19:23 mark. Fordham scored the next three points in what could have qualified as an extended run if not for Butler's five-point outburst in the first half, But the Rams pushed the margin back out to 29 by the first media timeout. After a Lamount Samuell layup with 13:32 remaining made the score 62-35 Rhode Island went on a 13-1 run to reach their largest lead of the game at 75-36. From there it was a matter of everyone staying healthy as URI would lead by no less than 32, and Fordham walk-on Ryan Hage capped the scoring with a layup in the final seconds.

Fordham closes out its road schedule on Wednesday with a trip to Philadelphia to play La Salle, and Rhode Island hosts George Washington the same night.
