Spiders Pick Up 20th Win of Season

Third straight 20-win season for Richmond

While the name Justin Harper may not be familiar to the casual college basketball fan it's well-known within the Atlantic 10, with Harper being one of the conference's premier players. Harper was at it again on Saturday afternoon, scoring 22 points while also grabbing nine rebounds and blocking four shots in the Spiders' 64-52 win over Saint Louis. The performance was Harper's 11th of 20 or more points this season and his 9th in the last 13 games. But most importantly the victory was Richmond's (20-6, 9-2) 20th, keeping them a game out of first place in the loss column. Dan Geriot and Kevin Smith supplemented Harper's performance with 12 and 10 points respectively. Dwayne Evans led Saint Louis (8-16, 3-8) with 21 points and 15 rebounds.

Richmond led by just three (26-23) at the half despite limiting the Billikens to 33.3% shooting from the field thanks in large part to the Saint Louis bench. Rick Majerus' reserves outscored Richmond's 12-2, including six from Cory Remekum. But the Spiders converted nine SLU turnovers into 11 points, allowing them to make up for their own poor shooting from the field (9-for-23). Richmond got off to a good start in the second half, scoring 10 of the first 15 points with a Geriot jumper with 16:06 remaining making the score 36-28. Chris Mooney's club made six of their first seven field goal attempts of the half, but they could only build on their halftime lead by three points when the first media timeout rolled around due to the improved shooting of the Billikens.

But after a Jordair Jett shot made the score 38-34 with 13:03 left in the game the Spiders made their charge, going on a 10-1 run over the next three minutes to push their lead out to 13. Harper was the chief culprit as well, scoring seven of the ten points. Another Harper three following an Evans three-point play made the score 51-38 with 9:04 remaining. But Saint Louis wasn't finished, answering with a 10-2 run to cut the margin to five with 4:32 remaining. But four points would be as close as the Billikens would get for the remainder of the contest, Richmond would make five of eight free throws over the next three minutes to hold off the Billikens, with a Geriot jumper mixed in and a Darius Garrett dunk closing the scoring. Next up for Richmond is a trip to Temple on Thursday night, and Saint Louis next meets St. Bonaventure on Wednesday.
