Billikens Spoil Dayton's Senior Night

Wright surpasses 1,500 points in loss

Senior forward Chris Wright surpassed the 1,500-point mark in his home finale, and outside of that there's nothing positive to take out of Dayton's performance. The Flyers shot 33.3% as a team while Saint Louis made 53.1% of their shots to coast to a 69-51 victory. Mike McCall led the Billikens (12-17, 6-9) with 17 points and the bench added 31 points in the most impressive win of the season for Rick Majerus' team. Outside of Wright Dayton (19-11, 7-8) made just nine of thirty-four shots for the game, and at this rate one has to question if they're worthy of getting an opportunity to defend their Postseason NIT title despite a record that would likely get them into the 32-team field.

Saint Louis outscored Dayton 30-3 from beyond the arc, more than making up for 20 turnovers that resulted in 18 points off turnovers for Dayton. But the Flyers were loose with the basketball as well, turning the ball over sixteen times to just eight assists. Wright scored the first two points of the game on a jumper at the 19:19 mark, but that 2-0 lead would be their largest of the game. A second hoop from the senior following a Kyle Cassity three pointer would give Dayton their final lead of the game at 4-3. Saint Louis went on a 9-0 run over the next four minutes with reserves Rob Loe and Christian Salecich providing seven of the points. Dayton pulled to within five but a quick Billiken response pushed the lead out to 20-9 with 11:12 left in the half.

SLU would lead by no fewer than nine the rest of the half, pushing their lead out to 35-19 at the break with an 8-3 scoring edge over the final 4:29. Saint Louis received 19 points from their bench in the first half to just nine for Dayton, and Josh Benson scored all nine for the Flyers. The second half provided more of the same with Saint Louis leading by 18 at the first media timeout, and a Dwayne Evans basket with 15:17 remaining pushed the lead out to 20 for the first time. Dayton closed to within 17 on a Juwan Staten bucket with 10:11 left in the contest, but it only took a minute for the Billikens to push their lead back out to 22. Baskets from Evans and Loe gave Saint Louis their largest lead of the night at 69-43 with 5:47 remaining, essentially closing out a poor performance from the Flyers in their home finale.

Dayton finishes the regular season on Saturday at George Washington while Saint Louis hosts first-place Xavier.
