Xavier Wins 37th Straight A-10 Home Game

Holloway rebounds from off night

After shooting 3-for-17 from the field in Xavier's loss at Charlotte on Thursday night, things couldn't get much worse for guard Tu Holloway. And that was indeed the case as he made eight of sixteen shots in scoring a game-high 24 points as the Musketeers (16-6, 8-1) beat Saint Louis by the final score of 76-68. Four of Xavier's five starters reached double figures as they added to their conference record with a 37th consecutive Atlantic 10 home win. Brian Conklin led Saint Louis (8-14, 3-6) with 24 points and Rob Loe added 18 but it wasn't enough for the Billikens to avoid losing for the third time in their last four games.

Xavier led by as many as nine in the first half, going on a 10-2 run over seven minutes to take a 25-16 lead into the under eight media timeout. Mark Lyons was key during this stretch in regards to setting up his teammates, tallying two of his game-high seven assists and scoring on a layup with 7:01 left in the half to push the lead out to nine. Saint Louis was unable to make much of a dent in the lead the rest of the half, going into the locker room down 31-24. Luckily for the Bills the margin was that small despite them shooting just 30.4% from the field, but rebounding would be something that plagued the visitors for much of the afternoon.

Xavier used their superior size to out-rebound Saint Louis 36-24 for the game, grabbing 11 offensive rebounds to just one for SLU. But Rick Majerus' club got off to a good start in the second half, ripping off an 8-0 run over the first 2:12 to take a 32-21 lead. Loe made a pair of three pointers, the second of which was answered by Holloway to give the Musketeers back the lead. Saint Louis would stretch their lead out to as many as four points but they couldn't establish control of the game as Xavier used the interior and their rebounding edge to ultimately take the lead for good with 12:47 remaining on a Lyons shot in the paint.

The Musketeers would stretch their lead out to as many as nine points thanks to the foul line (7-8 in the final 23 seconds), where they wrapped the game up. Next up for Xavier is a trip out of conference to play Georgia on Tuesday while Saint Louis next hosts La Salle on Wednesday night.
