Scoff at the A10? Think Again!
In recent years many have criticized the A10, declaring that a ‘Mid Major’ conference could never compare to one of a Big 12 or SEC. Others say that if an A10 team ever made it to the deeps of the NCAA tournament, then it would have to be considered luck. That there is no way a weak schedule like teams encounter in the A10 could ever prepare you for the Dance. But, if you take a look at this year, you will soon find out that all the stereotypes are all wrong. With two months to play in the NCCA season, the A10 now has 10 teams with winning records, likely this will change to 11 because a good St. Bonaventure has a nice shot at beating a weak St. Joseph’s team, Though that certainly isn’t a given. So far this year, ’lesser’A10 teams have been able to put up a fight against their conference rivals. Some very competitive games have been played here early. Including the Big Brother of the Atlantic 10 Xavier (11-5), who has dictated the conference for the majority of the 2000 decade. In their first conference game, X was able to pull out in front early, but had to hold off a ranging La Salle (9-7) to get what most thought was going to be an easy win. And even in their 2nd game in conference, they where trailing at the half by 11. It took a strong team effort, to pull away from George Washington (11-5). All in All, this conference could be won by any of the top 11.
The Atlantic 10 is filled with teams that can sneak up and bit you, Just take the Richmond Spiders (sorry for the bad pun). Just ask the Florida Gators, who after getting crushed by Syracuse, thought they had an easy game against Richmond. They left their own house, with a loss. Over all, The A10 maybe one of the most entertaining conference to keep an eye on this year. Though you will not see the star power of the Big 12 or SEC, the talent of the teams could very well make up for it. And playing in these close games can only help you, when you are under pressure in the greatest tournament of them all: March Madness.
